Equal Pay Day
Wednesday, March 24, 2027
Symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned the prior year. A good day to review pay equity practices.
Who must comply
All employers. The federal Equal Pay Act requires equal pay for equal work regardless of sex, and many states have their own (often broader) pay-equity and pay-transparency laws.
Background
Equal Pay Day was started by the National Committee on Pay Equity in 1996 to mark how far into the new year women must work to match what men earned the prior year. The date shifts annually to reflect the wage gap.
How to make the most of it
- Run a pay-equity analysis to surface and address unexplained gaps.
- Review job postings and offers against state pay-transparency rules.
- Document objective, consistent criteria for pay decisions.
