National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls

May 4 – 8, 2027

A week-long event to raise awareness about preventing fall hazards in construction. Employers encouraged to pause work for safety talks.

Who must comply

Primarily construction employers, but any business with work at height. Falls are consistently the leading cause of death in construction.

Background

OSHA, NIOSH, and the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) launched the National Fall Prevention Stand-Down in 2014 in response to falls being the number-one cause of construction fatalities.

How to make the most of it

  • Pause work for a toolbox talk on ladder, scaffold, and roof fall protection.
  • Inspect harnesses, lanyards, and anchor points and pull anything damaged.
  • Review rescue plans for anyone working in a personal fall-arrest system.
  • Invite workers to flag the fall hazards they worry about most.
